The New Way ~ Maxine Alexander

before
Landscaping is one of the perks you will find in masonry! Although it will take hard work and dedication, the outcomes will be magnificent. Shop teacher, Mr. Gary Sperdute, and assistant teacher, T.O., have worked on many projects in their life time. With the help of our Masonry students, this project was efficiently finished in two weeks.

The interview:
QUESTION: What can you tell us about Versa-Lok porches?
SPERDUTE: It’s a new wave in construction.

Jack Hammer
QUESTION:  What difference can you see in the two porches?
SPERDUTE:   A difference would be the modern look.  It compliments the appearance and now makes the house stand out.
Old Steps
QUESTION:  What is the estimate amount for a job like this?
SPERDUTE:  Using two to three people for this job, the price would be two to three times higher than a standard block porch, but the end result is worth it.

QUESTION:  What knowledge would a student gain after graduating your shop?
SPERDUTE:  The students would have the makings of a small contractor: tone mason, brick laying, block laying or working for the union as an apprentice. Their knowledge would be estimating materials, blueprint reading, making elaborate sidewalks, blueprint reading, and much more.

QUESTION:  Are there any other schools that work with Versa-Lok?
New Steps
SPERDUTE: No other vocational school in our area works with block and brick, and I try to keep the kids updated the today’s construction (Vers-Lok, stone carving, mailboxes, water features, and concrete).

QUESTION: Do you have any future projects planned?
SPERDUTE: Yes, we are going to work on a sidewalk; I plan to show my students stamp and color concrete, and expose aggregate concrete.

In conclusion, masonry is a big part of our community. With the help of Sperdute and TO, the student will be able to fulfill the landscaping dream -- building this world one brick at a time
