Face Off ~ by Jem Montgomery

If you walked into the cosmetology shop, one of the first things you would notice is the wall, labeled "Face-Off,” covered in masks. Cosmetology students gain their inspiration, knowledge and experience for their masks from the TV show "Face-Off.”

Because creativity is an important aspect of constructing the masks, prices for materials can become expensive. This year, cosmetology students, under the direction of Ms. Cepro and Ms. Marino, decided to make the masks the old fashioned way -- with papier mache.

This challenged the students' creative abilities and imagination, and the results have been amazing! Students usually research ideas online and then build their masks from the ground up.

Ms. Cepro declared, "Every year it just keeps building, which is what's so exciting about it!"

Congratulations goes to the winner, junior Allegra Assid, for her Lady and the Tramp Mask!

Letter from the Staff

On behalf of everyone involved in the LCCTC Eagle Staff, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving season.

Whether you're sitting around the dinner table, surrounded by your loved ones or in the car on your way to see them, don't forget to be thankful for all the wonderful things you have in life.

It doesn't matter if it's your friends, your family, your car, or maybe even your significant other; make sure you stay grateful for what you have in your life. Don't forget about all of your loved ones who served in the armed forces, who gave you your freedoms and, in result, just about everything you could possibly be thankful for today.

Enjoy your meals this Thanksgiving, and save your leftovers. Take a day to share your blessings by serving others.  Shop -- until you drop on Black Friday, and don't forget to remember our local stores on Small Business Saturday, too!  Hunters, be safe out there and follow all necessary game laws.

We'll see you in December!

Sincerely yours,

Samantha Amon & Nolin Marcus

Did You Ever Wonder... ~ Charlynn Todd

Did you ever wonder why autumn brings such beautiful scenery? The biggest factor of this season is the vibrant tree leaves. There is a reason why these leaves reveal their colors during this time period.  Many deciduous trees shed their leaves as part of their strategy to survive through the winter.  Like some woodland critters, trees also go through a hibernation stage.
It isn't the temperatures that trigger this. As the days grow shorter, there is less sunlight. Trees get their energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis. So, the fact that there is less sunlight lets the trees know that it’s time to wind down for hibernation.

During the hibernation process, the trees stop producing chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, the natural chemical that gives the tree leaves their green pigment; leaves would be the same fall colors all year round. This is why the leaves lose their green pigment and eventually fall off. The beautiful colors such as red, orange, and yellow are actually there all year round, but are only revealed during the hibernation process. That is why autumn brings such beautiful scenery.

A Celebration of Life!

With a smile, Ms. Jeri Palumbo would often declare, "Help me Rhonda!" so much so, that the Peer Leaders she advised created t-shirts to humbly honor he hard work and dedication.

On the day following the news of her passing, these same students wore these t-shirts as they tirelessly worked through tears to craft purple ribbons in her honor and distribute them to the almost 500 students and faculty at Lawrence County Career and Technical Center. Beloved history teacher, Ms. Palumbo was a life-changer. From the moment she walked through the doors of the school as a student teacher, she spent her forty plus years in education inspiring students and faculty alike to reach higher than could ever be imagined. She was the epitome of professionalism and a woman who led by example.

Students who were blessed to call her "Teacher" would rarely say that the work in class was easy, but Ms. Palumbo never asked anyone to work harder than she did herself.

"She  wouldn't take no for an answer," remembers Peer Leader Jem Montgomery, "and most couldn't fathom saying no because they knew that they would be blessed with whatever she was asking of them."

"She made her students feel that we were all a part of her," remarks Peer Leadership Destinee Coates, "and together we were all a part of something so much bigger."

This year, our LCCTC Yearbook will be dedicated to the life of this amazing woman.

She expected respect, and from so many, she received it -- she earned it.

Whenever tears fell, Ms. Palumbo would reference this quote by Dr. Seuss: "don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened." In the wake of the recent events, it is appropriate to adapt this quote to perfectly fit the situation: "Don't cry because it's over; smile..."  Ms. Palumbo -- because YOU happened -- to US!

Albert P. Gettings Foundation ~ Matty Tataseo

Everyone knows Mrs. Gettings; she's the teacher who always has a bit of good advice and who makes sure students are on their best behavior and follow the rules.

What some may not know is that Mrs. Gettings had a brave son who fought in Iraq.

Corporal Albert Pasquale Gettings of the United States Marine Corps was born on March 8, 1978. His parents named him after his two grandfathers, as is the tradition of the Gettings' family. Since Albert was seven years old, he was interested in the military. His uncle, being in the Army, was a huge factor; he brought home gifts like MREs (ready to eat meals), Army t-shirts, and hats.

Albert became driven to join the military after 9/11 occurred. He felt like he could have done something to help, could've stopped this tragic day in our history. So, without his parents knowing, Albert enlisted into the Marine Corps. The Gettings family found this out after Albert's recruiter called home about that week's PT (physical training) session. Mrs. Gettings was taking classes at the time of the call. Mr. Gettings told Albert that he would have to tell his mother. "He said, 'Mom sit down'. I knew there was something wrong since he would always tell me to sit down when he would wreck the car or got a ticket. So I asked what's wrong with the car? Did you get a ticket? He didn't answer with words; he instead pulled out his military ID and set it on the table." Mrs. Gettings recalled that she cried but accepted his choice.

Albert went to basic training in 2002, being named Marine of the Quarter twice while at Paris Island. In 2004 he was deployed to Afghanistan for the first time. Albert returned home one year later. He was married in May of 2005 and was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in the following September. It was January 5th, 2006, when Albert's squad and another tried to flush out a sniper. Albert was hit and fell. Another Marine tried to come to his aid and was also hit. Albert continued fighting as he issued orders to eliminate the threat to the other US soldiers in the squad.  His actions prevented and further casualties and saved the lives of his fellow Marines.

Albert passed away from his wounds, but the saying from that day was "One Marine can make a difference." Mrs. Gettings told her own interpretation of the saying. "It means stepping up to the plate, using your patriotism, courage, intelligence and not thinking twice about it. It also means no turning back and being a role model as well." Since his passing, Albert was given a Purple Heart, received a memorial plaque at the New Castle Courthouse, the Bronze Star, and a Combat V for Heroic Achievement. Also, at Camp Lejuene, NC, there is an award given to a Marine in Fox Company who demonstrates service to his fellow Marines.  Here in Lawrence County there is a baseball park, where he played as a boy, and a government building named in his honor.

Albert Pasquale Gettings was truly a hometown hero and will be forever remembered for his deeds and his life.

                                         Albert P. Gettings 1978-2006
                                         Rest in Peace Marine

Light Up Night! ~ Samantha Amon

Light up Night Parade is something everyone, everywhere has to look forward to every year. However, for eight lucky girls, they got the thrill of being able to ride in the beautiful LCCTC Holiday Court float on Thursday, November 12.

For four of these girls, this was their first and only chance to enjoy the spotlight in the parade that comes with being on Holiday Court, Samantha Amon, senior in COT, Allison Clingensmith, senior in HA, Madison Hansotte, senior in HA, and Brittany Hawke, senior in AB. These amazing ladies are letting this experience bring them closer, even Kayla Baker, a senior in COS, who was with her drill team during the parade, was able to share a moment of excitement with the rest of senior court.

When you ask the girls to explain Light up Night, of course you will get words such as cold and frigid, but when you ask what their emotions were, you see a different part of them. Brittany expressed how overwhelming it was, “There were a lot of people and that was the first time I've ever been to Light up Night.”

Allison mentioned, “It felt good to be on court. Proud even.”

“Even though I was in the previous years with marching band, this was a new experience," added Madison.  "To be on a float with some amazing girls that made court, I wouldn't want to share the moment with anyone else.”

“It was a day I will remember for as long as I can, the emotions I had could only be described as a young child waking up on Christmas morning running towards the Christmas tree.” proclaimed Samantha.

Our junior Holiday Court members, Jo Ellen, junior in VT, and Kaylinn Clayton, junior in HA, had their own things to say. Jo Ellen said, “I’m very happy to have made court.” While Kaylinn stated “It was a great experience, I really enjoyed being there."

Sophomore Holiday Court members included Angel Kaszowski, sophomore in COS, and Collen Gascer, sophomore in VT. Angel expressed how much fun she had in the parade, while Collen stated that despite being in the parade before, she loved being there for Holiday Court.

Even Mrs. Pastrick had something to share, “ I’m proud of all those who participated. We represented LCCTC extremely well.”

Trim the Fat and the Trees ~ Presley Boots

Do you ever wonder, "How do I stay fit all year long when we have all of this delicious food during the holidays?" If so, here are some good tips from our very own school nurse, Mrs. Cwynar.

  • Don’t pack on those dreadful pounds, WORK OUT!!
  • Don’t eat so much on the holidays, watch your proportions.
  • Have a splurge day instead of taking in a lot of unhealthy food everyday with the leftovers.

With these few tips, you can still enjoy your delicious holiday foods, but know you're helping yourself in the long run. It’s good to eat, but we tend to overdo ourselves. Think about your health next holiday when you're wanting to pile up your plate. Follow these few helpful tips, and they will benefit you in many ways.
