"Learn & Earn" with Cooperative Education ~ by Jem Montgomery

"Cooperative Education," according to Co-Op Coordinator, Ms. MaryJean Tuminella, "provides the bridge from school to work" She goes on to say that it combines a perfect blend of academics and occupation. This experience allows technical students to "learn and earn" on the job.

Co-op differs from a regular work experience because co-op release must be in the field of a technical student's shop. The training supervisor, in turn, becomes the shop teacher. Students are practicing skills learned in shop, therefore giving students an opportunity to see what the world of work is like while still having access to the tech center for employment guidance.

There are presently 24 LCCTC students on co-op at jobs such as restaurants, nursing homes and auto repair shops; however, there are guidelines that have to be met in order to receive co-op benefits. For instance:

  • All credits needed to graduate must be accumulated.
  • The student requesting co-op release must have a C or better in his or her shop.
  • A good discipline record is necessary.

These students on co-op are required to attend two co-op classes a month. These courses cover important details such as importance of work ethic and how to interact professionally with supervisors and peers.

For more information on LCCTC's Co-Op program, make an appointment to see Ms. Tuminella in the Guidance Office; she'll be happy to tell you more about this "win-win-win situation that benefits the student, the employer, and LCCTC."

Senior Health Assistant student, Jem Montgomery has been sworn into the United States Navy as an E1 Seaman Recruit. After graduation, she will serve her country as a Medic and plans to continue her education to become a Psychologist or Therapist in a VA Hospital. In her spare time, you will most likely find her spending time with her family and friends OR with her nose in a classic novel.
