LCCTC Electrifies on Engineering Day

The 1st of March brought in a cold front, and as the winds replaced our thoughts of approaching spring with winter weather, a team of future engineers from LCCTC couldn't help but think of their project: to propose a plan for the use of solar and wind energy.  This team of seven was on their way to complete for Engineering Day sponsored by Elwood Quality Steel.

Ready to compete, the Engineering Day team decided to don their shop shirts to represent pride in their project and of our school.  Led by Mr. Kurt Miller, MTT instructor; Mr. Pete Montini, EO instructor; and Mr. Brad Windhorst, science and physics teacher; the team consisted of the following:
  • senior, Billy Adams, MTT
  • sophomore, Rachael Black, COT
  • sophomore, April Boots, MTT
  • sophomore, Trevor Cunningham, MTT
  • sophomore, Lane Kline, MTT
  • sophomore, Jaden Locke, COT
  • sophomore, Kyle Michaels, MTT
Once the physical project was complete, each member needed to present.  Lane identified the problem: Fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy resources will one day cease to be available. Kyle discussed the idea of a future without access to fossil fuels; a possible answer:  Wind and solar energy can be a viable answer. Jaden stated that "solar and wind energy can improve the way we get power."  Trevor's portion of the presentation was to discuss the construction of the model.

Even before the official results were published, Mr. Miller said, "No matter where they finished, I'm proud of the work they put in [to] pull it all together in such a short time."

Why did these students get involved?  April was interested in seeing an authentic shop setting, While Kyle has a bit of prior knowledge of the field of engineering, Trevor and Jaden both wanted to learn something new.

"I would definitely participate in Engineering Day next year," April replied.  "I think we could do even better if we worked more on the presentation aspect of the project."  Jaden, quite familiar with PowerPoint, has a lot of ideas for next year's presentation and looks forward to returning to competition.

Also wanting to improve the process, Trevor would like to begin earlier; Kyle agrees stating, "I'd like to do more researching to inspire us to come up with even better ideas."

Considering the journey more so than the outcome, Mr. Miller reminds us that it is important to note that his desire is to "want the kids to push themselves to be their best."  Considering the quality of the final product, they have made him proud.

So there you have it -- the team gave it all they had and are excited to return; Engineering Day was a success!
