The History of Halloween

By Harlee Barnwell, Eagle Journalism Club

As we all know, Halloween is a holiday, but what made this spooky night one of the most beloved holidays for both young and old? Most think that Halloween is all about the candy and costumes but do you know the origins of Halloween?

Halloween is also known as "Hallowmas." It is the evening before the Christian's holy day of Hallows Day, a time to honor the saints.

Many traditions changed; for a example, Jack-O-Lanterns were originally made from turnips! Crazy right?  The Jack-O-Lantern tradition came from a Celtic tale where Jack tricked the devil into playing for his drink; wanting to play a trick, the devil gave Jack a hellish ember. However, Jack being wise enough to recognize the deceit turned the ember into a radish carved to scare away any future hellish encounters.

One of the most loved Halloween songs came to life in The Nightmare Before Christmas a favorite among Halloween movies. This movie celebrates not only Halloween; it was also features another favorite holiday, Christmas. Tim Burton, famed director, released this movie on October, 12, 1993; the musical score was written by Danny Elfman whose songs have been featured in many other movies including Disney's movies Halloweentown and Halloween Screams, the Corpse Bride, and several episodes of The Simpsons.

So as you can see there is a lot more to Halloween than just candy and costumes; it has a history behind it that many did not know... the candy is good too.

Fright Fest

Congratulations to the LCCTC students for their participation in this year's Cascade Park Fright Fest to benefit the American Cancer Society. $5150 was raised. So many outside including of our LCCTC family helped to make this annual event a huge success including event organizer, Camden and Brandel Cwynar, our school nurse's sons; students from Shenango high school; and Ernie Copper from the American Cancer Society.

Why give up a perfectly good weekend?
"I wanted to be involved in something really fun," states Rachel Duffy, Restaurant Trades Sophomore, "and to be able to help the people who need it. It's a big event, and I'm glad I got to be a part of it."

Riley Leonard, Restaurant Trades Sophomore, agrees but she has a little more to add: "That, in itself was a good reason. But being able to dress up, scare people, and hang out with some amazing people was a huge plus, too."

Doug Hagg, Masonry senior, who is also an Eagle Scout and committed to a live of service, comments that he had "loads of fun."  I think all who attended and participated can agree!

Crafty-Corner: Milk Jug Jack-o-Lantern

~ By Brandee D'Ambrosi
Eagle Journalism Club

Although carving pumpkins is a lot of fun, not everybody enjoys the feeling of the slimy insides of the pumpkin. With this 2-step DIY, that’s not a problem!

IMG_5648[1].JPG
Things You Will Need
A milk jug or any type of plastic container
Your favorite permanent markers
____________________________________________________________
Step 1-  Use your permanent marker to draw an outline of your spooktacular Jack O’Lantern face. Since you are the artist, you can make it as simple or complex as you’d like! Originality is great!
IMG_5655[1].JPG
Step 2- For the last step (yes, I said last), fill in the face you just drew! You can use any color you’d like.

IMG_5660[1].JPG

When you’re done, you can do whatever you’d like with your Jack O’Lantern. Since they’re so easy and fun to make, make as many as you want; the possibilities are endless!
Just like pumpkins come in many different shapes and sizes, so do plastic containers! Draw a silly face on any of your empty drink containers, and you’re ready to go!

IMG_5667[1].JPG
If you display it outside, a little sand in the bottom will be sure to secure it in place, even in a gentle breeze. You can put a small candle inside of your pumpkin to make it glow; for safe celebrating, you can also put a battery-operated one in your milk jug Jack O’Lantern!

Blood Drive

No -- it's not the vampires who want your blood. It's the Central Blood Bank, and they desperately need your donations!

According to representatives from the CBB,

  • "the drive did better than expected and had 89 donors register and 76 life-saving units of blood were collected with 15 deferrals. Because of the generous and giving efforts of the staff and students, over 200 patient lives can be supported and/or saved at local hospitals such as UPMC - Jameson due to the generosity of everyone who gave or volunteered to help. Everyone’s efforts are greatly appreciated and this continued support of the local blood program will go a long way toward replenishing blood supplies and ultimately saving lives."
This is great news. So many are able to be helped because of the support of LCCTC's staff and students.

Here's a big thank you from Mr. Pavia:

We would like to thank all people who donated blood yesterday. Between students and staff, we had the most successful blood drive that I have been part of.
  • The blood drive staff complimented all of our students, saying how respectful all of our students were with the staff, also how impressive our drive was, with the size of our school (compared to the other schools in our district, the average is approx. 40-60 successful donations, we had over 70)
  • We processed over 90 units of blood yesterday. that will be used on over 270 people
  • Thank you to all of the staff that helped in donating yesterday
  • A special thank you to those who helped me with items yesterday that came about suddenly:  (Margy for the yearbook, Dana/Morgan for the list of students/birth dates, Ms. Pasterik for the yearbook and going above and beyond to make it work, front office Ashlee for printing off all of the roster sheets. Ms. Price and all the RT students for making pizza for the students to eat during lunch time of the blood drive (which was amazing). Janine for being so understanding for all of the attendance violations that I am sure we had. Mr. Orelli/Mr. Barker and the "NBA Morning Playoff Group" for allowing us to use the gym. And to all of the teachers who graciously allowed their students to come during the school day. Without you, this would never be able to happen.

Poem of the Month

"I never realized what a big deal that was.

How amazing it is to find someone who wants to hear about all

thethingsthatgooninyourhead.

You just think that things will stay the

way

they

are.

No one will understand you. You never look up,

In a moment that feels like every other moment in your life, and think,

' Soon ... this will be

over.'

But I understand more now. About how life works."

Pink Out Day

~ By Mariah Myers, HA sophomore, Eagle Journalism Club

All around the world, people are wearing pink to support breast cancer. On October 21, 2016 Lawrence County Career and Technical Center was proud to participate in this awareness as they took part in “Pink Out Day”, sponsored by Peer Leadership. More than half the student body and staff came together and wore pink.

The cosmetology shop assisted in participating in showing awareness by offering to do pink clip in and spray; they also painted ribbons on student’s cheeks for only a dollar. Many students came together to show their awareness of breast cancer Throughout the day, I asked students and staff how they felt about everyone coming together and wearing pink, and here is what they had to say:

“Almost all of our families here have been affected by cancer even if it is not breast cancer,” reflected Mrs.Cepro, Cosmetology instructor, “so we know what it feels like. We all have hope that there is a cure and there is a better way to treat people down the road.”

When I asked people about their feelings from the day, some responses were truly moving.

“I think it speaks to the community and the culture we're building here at the school," considered our school’s principal, Mr. Milanovich, "and students are working together for one purpose.”

Ms.O’Donnell HA instructor said, “I think it is great idea to remind everyone to get mammograms and screenings and everyone can remind their mom, grandparents to get screenings.”

The support for the awareness was readily visible; it was a sea of pink in the hallways and lunchroom, pink spray and extensions were everywhere. It was a time of togetherness for staff and students alike.

“It makes me feel like the school is well together,” states Mackenzie Nye, cosmetology sophomore.

“As Health Assistants, we would say, “We have hope’!” beams Alize Mitchell, HA senior.

“I think it’s a good cause,” considers Harley Barnwell HA student. “We are supporting something that actually matters in people's lives.”

All proceeds for LCCTC's Pink Out Day go to support the breast cancer research of Dr. Dennis Slamon, graduate of New Castle High School.

RT Heats Up the Kitchen ~ Kalley McClure

The lessons learned in Restaurant Trades range from safety procedures, to proper dining room set up, to making sure the oven is on the correct temperature for cooking or baking.

The students have learned the safety precautions of the shop:  what can be hazardous, the different types of fires that can happen in the kitchen and what to do in order to put them out.

They have been taught how to bake all different kinds of items and even make their own icing to put on cakes and the sweets they bake.

Mary Mills, junior from New Castle, states, "What I like best about shop is we work all together to make the kitchen run smoothly, and that Miss. Price is always there when we need her help on figuring out things."

Mary goes on to say that, "I also like that after where done doing everything for what we made that day, we get to taste it. I really enjoy sharing our creations with others and seeing their reactions to how good it is."

Victoria Arnold, senior from New Castle, helped prepare for open house, and what a spread they put out for the parents! She acknowledges that "whenever they take that first bite and that look of pure satisfaction forms on their faces -- that is so encouraging." Compliments go far for this shop!

Ben Schwartz, senior from New Castle, helped serve for the OAC and LAC meetings. He understands what it means to be professional including putting in the time needed to make sure the job was done correctly. "When I speak with my friends," Ben adds, "I might describe a meal as 'Fire!' but when I am representing the school, I need to have a professional voice. I need to speak properly."

The students don't just work in-house. LCCTC Restaurant Trades students recently participated in the Senior Expo where they helped care for 650 senior citizens. Senator Vogel responded to their service with this: "Your willingness to help seniors with a smile made the day a success. We had several compliments from constituents about the students [at LCCTC]. Great job!"

LCCTC Restaurant Trades students: Well-done!

See You at the Pole ~ Gemma Gatto

On Wednesday September 28th, students from all over the nation gathered at their school's flag pole before attending their first period classes; this was also true for Lawrence County CTC.

Roughly twenty students and adults from our school joined together to pray for our country, our cities and towns, and our school.

"It was nice to see other students publicly gather together with God." ~ Gwin Buntman, Health Assistant sophomore.

"Being able to pray for our school is important to me," recalls Kaitlyn Heeter, Health Assistant junior. "It means a lot to be able to gather with my friends to offer my prayers; there is so much support we can give in this way."

Oonagh Henning, Commercial Arts junior, liked that it took place outside around the flag pole.  She was able to show others her beliefs without having to say a word; her actions did the talking.  Oonagh feels that it is important to "unite with others who have similar beliefs."

"I just love to pray," beams Dayuna Reitnauer, Health Assistant sophomore.  Sometimes, it is as simple as that!

Mobile Mutts ~ Tess Zak, Krystal Vogel, and Madalyn Carroll

Will Smith once said that "skill is achieved through practice."

Tess Zak, Krystal Vogel, and Madalyn Carroll
As students study to become Veterinarian Assistants, they find that this to be true. Recently, a couple asked LCCTC's Vet Assistant shop to build a dog cart for them.  Even though the students had never tackled a task like this, these future Vet Techs were happy to help.
Bruce gets his new wheels!
In September of their second year studying to be Vet Assistants,  Krystal Vogel, New Castle junior, and Madalyn Carroll and Tess Zak, Ellwood City juniors, assembled a dog wheel chair for Bruce, an elderly Shetland sheepdog.  After so many years of loving his family, his back legs began to falter. Unable to put the chair together, Bruce's human family called Mrs. Yanak asking for help in assembling the equipment.

To be able to build the cart and get the dog settled, the Vet Assistant students had to practice for a few days to make it a new skill.  They had to follow the written instructions and DVD instructions to put the wheel chair together. Once they solved the puzzle of assembling the chair, Bruce's "mom and dad" brought him in to could fit the chair to him.
The project taught the students to communicate with clients and to work together. They were careful to correctly complete the wheelchair; they wanted to do their very best for Bruce and his family so that Bruce could walk without pain.

LCCTC's Vet Tech students are grateful to have been chosen for the project. It gave them such a sense of accomplishment to finish the work, and help Bruce and his people who desperately needed it.

Flight 93 Field Trip

It was a sunny day.  There was barely a cloud in the bright blue sky.  It was a day that will forever be remembered; a day that should never be forgotten.  It was September 11, 2001.

When people speak of 9/11, many think of the tragedy in the twin towers in New York City; some may remember those who lost their lives at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia; however, we felt the sting of that day quite close to home here in Pennsylvania in a peaceful field just a little over two hours away from where we live. On that same day, 40 passengers and crew lost their lives when they bravely fought back to take control of the plane, thus thwarting a loss of life at the U.S. Capital similar to the attacks at the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon.

For current students, their memory only exists in yearly anniversary specials on the History Channel,  in classroom discussions in American History, or from stories shared by grownups, but for a busload filled with LCCTC students, the history of 9/11 became so much more.

As these students traveled to Shanksville, PA, about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, they reflected on the lessons delivered by their English teacher, Mrs. Gettings.

Here are the reflections from our 40 LCCTC Students and their teachers:
