On December 1st, Mr. George Petronelis, LCCTC’s Welding teacher sent three 2nd year students to the 37th Annual Student Weld-Off sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS) at Pittsburgh Technical College. To compete against trade schools and different high schools, Jake Ponziani, Cody Gabauer, and Nate Vellone represented our school with outstanding skill.
As Mr. Petronelis explains, “Jake and Cody are now AWS qualified in the 3G Welding Position”, based on the vertical opposition angle of the weld. “This is pretty impressive for a 16-year old.” They both passed the 3g test and it seemed pretty impressive because, as Mr. Petronelis states, “They are well on their way to become very successful welders.” With this certification on their resume, AWS certification puts their name at the top of the top list for future employers.
The Steamfitters and local 449 support young welders as well as the Pittsburgh section of AWS. Ponziani and Gabauer have been invited to the AWS awards ceremony where they will receive their certified welding certifications.
“As a teacher, I was ecstatic,” states Petronelis. “I was like a kid when I got the phone call because I was so excited for them. I am very proud of all three of them.”
“It wasn’t a waste of time. It made me feel accomplished, and it makes me feel like I’m actually doing something with my life on my journey to be a pipeline welder,” states Ponziani. “I also feel like it is something that nobody can take away from me.”
Gabauer grins, “I didn’t give up. I practiced and took advantage of my time to prepare myself, and Mr. Petronelis really helped me prepare.”
For both, they practiced on test plates with hard work and dedication. One positive draw for both is the fact they don’t have to spend money on trade school or college on welding because they now already have this type of certification; however, both plan to continue to work toward more welding certifications.
Petronelis states that Vellone still has a little more preparation before he is certified. “I am very proud of Nate because he gave it his best and tried as hard the other guys!”
“When I get another chance to take the AWS certification, I’ll be sure to make better use of my shop time,” states Vellone. “I’ll be more focused when I practice.”
As a whole school, we say that WE ARE PROUD OF YOU ALL!
