Summer Reading will be A"Maze"ing for CP English 11

The CP English 11 students are gearing up for their summer reading assignments. In years past, students have selected The Hunger Games (Collins) and Divergent (Roth) for their reading novels. This year, they have chosen to read The Maze Runner (Dashner).

What will they need to do? Just 5 simple things:

1. TECHNOLOGY 1:  Incoming students are asked to join the classroom Facebook page. This page features literary "funnies" and links to reading and writing practice for standardized testing. It can also feature important news for the class.

2. TECHNOLOGY 2:  Students are asked to make a Gmail account with a professional name for future professional use. They should then email their teacher so that future assignments and Google Doc, Slides and Forms can easily be shared. They can also use their Google account to sign in to sites including NewsELA and Quizlet.

3. VOCABULARY:  Students will study the list of “100 Most Commonly Used Latin Roots” through Quizlet. They can study online at https://quizlet.com/16553388/100-most-commonly-used-latin-roots-flash-cards/ and will have a test on the first Friday of class when they return to school.

4. READING: They can choose to:
  • Read The Maze Runner & meet us in Cascade Park for a reading event. We are looking to meet on the Tuesday morning (August 18th) of the week of the Lawrence County Fair in a local park from 10-12. They were told to wear comfortable clothing and be ready for some fun! If the weather forecast is calling for terrible weather, the event will meet at the school in the library; they were told to be sure to check Facebook and/or Gmail for notification before they leave for the event. For specifics on the meeting location for the event, they can contact their teacher via Facebook messenger or via Gmail.
OR
  • Read The Maze Runner and complete the reading guide packets shared with them at the end of the school year -- if they are unable to make it to the reading event; they can also contact the school's guidance department for a copy of the novel and reading packet.
5. BONUS:  Finally, the class can EARN BONUS POINTS to start off the year with a boost by joining NewsELA's Camp NewsELA and reading 2 articles a week starting on June 13 and ending August 19:
