Could you imagine singing "Rodney the Red Nosed Reindeer?" How about, "Reginald the Red Nosed Raindeer"? Sounds silly, right? Well -- not for 34-year-old copywriter, Robert L. May (Hullinger).
According to an article featured in The Week, May was the creator of this well known and loved holiday story. Rudolf made his first appearance in 1939 in Montgomery Ward, a department store, as a coloring book. From the get-go, this promotion made a profit, and the rest "goe(s) down in history!"
Here's LCCTC's second favorite song:

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
You know Dasher, and Dancer, and
Prancer, and Vixen,
Comet, and Cupid, and
Donder and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose
and if you ever saw it
you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
play in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history
Prancer, and Vixen,
Comet, and Cupid, and
Donder and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose
and if you ever saw it

With December already being a popular and busy month, Bobby Helms who cut the single, Jingle Bell Rock, become a star again. Written by Joe Beal and Jim Boothe, this Rock and Roll Christmas song made it to the top 10 on Billboard magazine's Top 40 in 1957 only two days before Christmas. Not even a year went by, and once again, it returned to the top 10 in 1958 AND in 1960 ("Lindquist").
It has been a favorite ever since, and it was voted #1 favorite Christmas carol by students here at LCCTC.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun
Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air.
What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell rock
