LCCTC Celebrates SkillsUSA Competitors

For January, the morning on the 12th was warm -- 58°!  Practically a heat wave after all of the snow we just had...but a lot more snow was about to appear on the horizon, and LCCTC had work to do before even a flake would land.  After months of practice and hours of preparation, it was time to show off what we had learned.

Over 60 students from LCCTC donned their SkillsUSA gear and assembled at the New Castle School of Trades to compete in the District 10 SkillsUSA Competition for their chance at winning gold and continuing on to state competition in Hershey PA.

All took the chance to compete.  None placed last.  Many competed against over a dozen other students.  32 students medaled.  16 will compete at states.  ...and we are all proud of all of them.

ASSEMBLY KICK OFF VIDEO:  On Tuesday, January 16th, family, friends, students, and staff gathered to celebrate SkillsUSA at LCCTC.  Here is a video greeting from Mr. Rich to kick off the assembly:

Letter to the Phantom Hockey Team ~ Tabatha Zang

This is the willing letter that was sent to the Youngstown Phantom Hockey team in hopes that we would win an opportunity to earn money for our school, particularly the School Wide Positive Behavior (SWPB) program.  Soon, Mr. Orelli will go to the middle of the ice with 3,000 one dollar bills and try to gather as much as he can in a Dash For the Cash event.  To Tabatha:  Thank you for writing the essay, and to Mr Orelli:  Good luck!

Dear Phantom Hockey Team:

People often say that high school is the best time of your life, what they don’t tell you, however, is how hard it is for schools to receive adequate funding. Schools are often left to fend for themselves when it comes to funds for extra things like new computers, newer books, or even School Wide Positive Behavior field trips (SWPB).

Here at Lawrence County Career and Technical Center (LCCTC) we could use the extra funding for new computers. The computers we have are old enough that they are not able to update to the newest version of a program. They tend to run slow and their battery runs out very quickly. Some don’t even work unless they’re plugged in.

Although electronics are good to have handy, it’s always good to hit the books. Some textbooks are in very bad condition. Some pages might be missing, fringed, or even stained. Even some of the textbooks are outdated.

Technology and Books can be great things to have, but nothing compares to a good school field trip. School Wide Positive Behavior field trips make a big difference in our school but lately LCCTC has been finding trouble to keep them going. SWPB trips are a good way to help the students get a break from the stressful school work and relax for a few hours. The trips are beneficial to the students who help keep our school a positive place to be. It’s a reward for doing something good.

At LCCTC “We are HERE, we are READY, we are RESPECTFUL, and we are SAFE.” When it comes to funds for new extra things like computers, books, or even SWPB field trips, schools are often left to fend for themselves.

We would appreciate the opportunity to participate in the Dash For Cash.  I can promise you that we'll put the money to good use -- to encourage us to continue to make good decisions.

Respectfully Yours,
Tabatha Zang
